The challenge

The rising prevalence of chronic wounds and technological progress in medical textile fabrication has increased the demand for versatile wound dressing products. It has been forecasted that the global wound dressing market can exceed $15 billion by 2022. Such a continuing rise in the need for wound dressing products requires the fabrication of advanced sustainable products originating from renewable materials such as cellulose. However, introducing such bio-based products into the markets requires deep clinical studies, regulatory authorization, and industrial and public recognition.

The solution

Porous ultralight materials so-called aerogels are space technology-driven products, which once were used as insulation tiles in space shuttles. A wound dressing made from cellulose aerogel fibers provides a thermally controlled moist environment for optimal healing and absorbs wound exudate. It is possible to deposit medicines and antimicrobial agents in the porous structure of the fibers to accelerate wound healing and bring new convenience to patient care. By combining the characteristics of biopolymer, microfibers, and aerogels the product can be a turning point in both technical and medical fields especially for wound healing application and support environmental thinking!

Wood-based aerogel textile can promote wound healing of patients!
